"Brite Eyes"

Raised
R540,000 32%

Between 2011 and 2019, the Rotary Club of Zimbali, in partnership with the iLembe Health Department, successfully funded and facilitated seven cataract surgery camps at Stanger and Maphumulo hospitals. Through this initiative, a remarkable 1,004 cataract surgeries were performed—restoring sight and dignity to hundreds of patients in underserved communities.

Building on this success, the club is now seeking new partnerships to help scale and sustain the impact of the project. The vision for the next phase involves the procurement of portable ophthalmic theatre equipment and surgical instruments, which would be dedicated to cataract and other eye-related surgeries.

This investment would allow the currently underutilised spare theatre at Maphumulo Hospital—which lacks ophthalmic equipment—to be fully operational. With two theatres available, the number of surgeries performed during each camp could effectively double, significantly reducing the backlog of patients awaiting treatment.

Moreover, the portability of the equipment would allow the club to extend this life-changing service to other rural hospitals in the region that currently lack the infrastructure to conduct cataract surgeries.

The Rotary Club of Zimbali is committed to the long-term sustainability of this project and is actively engaging stakeholders to bring this vision to life. The goal is simple but powerful: to restore sight, independence, and quality of life to as many individuals as possible, especially those in marginalized and remote communities.

Each cataract surgery costs approximately R2,500 per patient—a small amount that makes a life-changing difference. For many individuals in rural communities, cataracts mean the loss of independence, mobility, and livelihood. But for just R2,500, their sight—and quality of life—can be restored.
